Good vegan foods (and bad)

AUGUST 2022

Admittedly I don't often buy much in the way of manufactured vegan foods.  But this was on offer in my local Sainsbury's supermarket so I thought I would give it a go

Squeaky Bean Shawarma Chicken Style Kebab

I tried it 2 ways - with a salad and on a sandwich

It would have gone down better with a dollop of mayo, but I didn't have any in so I gave it a taste test without.

This product is very like meat - more like pork than chicken to me. Or maybe similar to chicken breast that has been roasted a bit too dry. I needed to add some vinaigrette to the whole plate, after which it was excellent

So if your aim is to fool a meat eater then this will do quite nicely.  I've never knowingly tasted shawarma before so can't comment on the authenticity of the flavour, but it was mildly and very tastily pleasant.  And the manufacturers seem to have perfected that "done over charcoal" nuance - you know, more than just a smoky flavour

The pieces are very small so I had to pick out the bigger pieces to make a sandwich.  Some of the pack was just like crumbs.  However, again, a little mayo mixed in would turn these very small pieces into a nice sandwich spread

Packaging - most of it seems to be recyclable, but whether that actually happens is another matter.  However, unlike many other items, the contents are crammed in which of course will minimise the quantity of plastic used

I don't think I'd pay the full price

But as seems to be almost always the case, health wise, this manufactured vegan food is really no better than any other manufactured food - containing so many things that no-one ever would even have in the kitchen, never mind ever think of adding it to home made food

So to me this is not good vegan food at all - but handy to have now and again

JANUARY 2020

2nd January 2020

Just on a whim I bought some vegan sausages in the Sainsbury's frozen isle

Very tasty!

At first glance the ingredients look good - and as easy to cook as any conventional sausage

Looking tasty

with crusty bread, a baked potato and a dollop of ketchup - nice!

Looking closer - there's far too many ingredients.  Is this all really necessary?

Must say - despite the questionable ingredients, I did really enjoy these sausages.  so, good for special treats or to keep by for when time is lacking

DECEMBER 2019

December 2019

Tried out this super looking vegan pizza I found in Sainsburys recently.  I was quite excited because there are few vegan pizzas to be found and they can often be quite dry.

This one looked promising

Card box and little plastic wrapping - good

In fact, even better - it was set on a card disc instead of the usual polystyrene.

What completely spoiled it for me was that there was far, far too much salt.  All I could taste was salt.  For me this made it totally unpalatable - big shame

Also, it is not organic which always confuses me with vegan food. If veganism is all about care for animals then surely that should involve care for the environment of wild animal.  Why use pesticide if it kills bees as well as other insects?

Maybe I will write to them:
